<p>Das County liegt im mittleren Südosten von Indiana, ist im Osten etwa 80 km von <a href="Ohio" title="Ohio">Ohio</a>, im Süden etwa 100 km von <a href="Kentucky" title="Kentucky">Kentucky</a> entfernt und hat eine Fläche von 967 Quadratkilometern, wovon zwei Quadratkilometer Wasserfläche sind. Es grenzt im Uhrzeigersinn an folgende Countys: <a href="Rush_County_(Indiana)" title="Rush County (Indiana)">Rush County</a>, <a href="Franklin_County_(Indiana)" title="Franklin County (Indiana)">Franklin County</a>, <a href="Ripley_County_(Indiana)" title="Ripley County (Indiana)">Ripley County</a>, <a href="Jennings_County" title="Jennings County">Jennings County</a>, <a href="Bartholomew_County" title="Bartholomew County">Bartholomew County</a> und <a href="Shelby_County_(Indiana)" title="Shelby County (Indiana)">Shelby County</a>.

<p>Decatur County wurde am 31. Dezember 1821 als Original-County aus freiem Territorium gebildet. Benannt wurde es nach <a href="Stephen_Decatur" class="mw-redirect" title="Stephen Decatur">Stephen Decatur</a>, einem Kommandeur der Marine und Nationalheld.

<p>Nach der <a href="United_States_Census_2000" title="United States Census 2000">Volkszählung im Jahr 2000</a> lebten im Decatur County 24.555 Menschen in 9389 Haushalten und 6882 Familien. Die Bevölkerungsdichte betrug 25 Einwohner pro Quadratkilometer. Ethnisch betrachtet setzte sich die Bevölkerung zusammen aus 98,50 Prozent Weißen, 0,05 Prozent Afroamerikanern, 0,11 Prozent amerikanischen Ureinwohnern, 0,72 Prozent Asiaten, 0,01 Prozent Bewohnern aus dem pazifischen Inselraum und 0,10 Prozent aus anderen ethnischen Gruppen; 0,52 Prozent gaben die Abstammung von zwei oder mehr Ethnien an. 0,54 Prozent der Bevölkerung waren spanischer oder lateinamerikanischer Abstammung.

</p><p>Von den 9389 Haushalten hatten 34,1 Prozent Kinder unter 18 Jahre, die mit ihnen im Haushalt lebten. 60,1 Prozent waren verheiratete, zusammenlebende Paare, 9,2 Prozent waren allein erziehende Mütter und 26,7 Prozent waren keine Familien. 22,8 Prozent waren Singlehaushalte und in 9,6 Prozent lebten Menschen mit 65 Jahren oder darüber. Die Durchschnittshaushaltsgröße betrug 2,58 und die durchschnittliche Familiengröße lag bei 3,03 Personen.

</p><p>26,3 Prozent der Bevölkerung waren unter 18 Jahre alt, 8,9 Prozent zwischen 18 und 24, 29,3 Prozent zwischen 25 und 44 Jahre. 22,3 Prozent zwischen 45 und 64 und 13,3 Prozent waren 65 Jahre alt oder älter. Das Durchschnittsalter betrug 36 Jahre. Auf 100 weibliche Personen kamen 97,6 männliche Personen. Auf 100 Frauen im Alter von 18 Jahren und darüber kamen 94,4 Männer.

</p><p>Das jährliche Durchschnittseinkommen eines Haushalts betrug 40.401 <a href="US-Dollar" title="US-Dollar">USD</a>, das Durchschnittseinkommen der Familien 46.453 USD. Männer hatten ein Durchschnittseinkommen von 31.790 USD, Frauen 24.688 USD.
